Copper ring pried out quite easily. Carb fitted in. Now I see why the rather desperate strategy was tried in the first place: the gooseneck has a mangled flange. I don't think the pictures even quite show just how bent and distorted it is, and I have no idea how it got to such a state. But I don't think any gasket will solve the problem. So, yes, I am in search of a correct carb or at least the gooseneck, and I'd prefer it came with the throttle complete, as my parts look home-made. Thanks for explanation of vacuum.
