Mark; I've never heard or thought of cleaning transmission gears before. Click & Clack probably could have had some fun with that notion. Are you a dental hygienist? There may well be some crud in the transmission that isn't good for bearings or gears but has settled and is staying out of circulation. While cleaning the things you can get at, (not much), you may loosen gunk that would have stayed safely out of the way had you left it alone. I was taught to clean things completely or leave them be. "If it ain't broke, (or breaking), don't fix it" may also be sound advice. Luckily you can probably follow any of the posted suggestions/advice or none at all without any problems. I think it would take a determined effort to ruin your transmission. Good luck and have fun. Nat
