Post subject:  Ujoint and transmission questions 1917 Roadster

Pulled my transmission to rebuild clutch and have a few questions.
1917 Roadster aluminum transmission. Car serial number 157,755
Found a crack in transmission housing between top hole of rear transmission seal and top of transmission. Has anyone seen this before? Causes? My 4 ujoint housing bolts were tight and the top rear seal bolt was loose where hole is cracked. Wondering best method to repair? Helicoil? Stud? Lock tight? Epoxy?
Going to clean up housing today and get a better look at it. Bolt still threads in hole with crack. Maybe bolt was bottomed out in past and caused crack.
The other concern I have is ujoint had no felt or shims when I bought car. Wondering procedure for determining how many shims are used. Thanks, John

Pulled lower transmission shaft and found a lot of wear on both shaft and bushings. Plan on going to Romar for replacement.
After cleaning up bolts that hold rear seal noticed they are all banged up with chunks missing and heads rounded off. Now thinking u joint came apart in past and may be cause of transmission housing crack.
Going to put everything back together dry today and see if the top bolt tightens

So the bolt hole with crack doesn’t hold rear seal but is right above it. Put things back together dry fit and bolt tightened up fine. Think I’m going to use lock tite on bolt and call it good.
Found bearing in flywheel going bad so changing that one as well.
Everything cleaned up and waiting for parts
While transmission is out going to replace starter switch with one with a diode instead of a coil.
